Remember the good old days when we use to be able to do and say things that people didn’t take offence to? A question was recently put to me that has made me think – do you think racism will die out or do you think political correctness keeps the fire burning?
There have been several examples of political correctness that, while the intentions are good, do nothing but cause angst amongst other members of the community. One such example is the renaming of the Christmas tree to the “holiday tree”. Why? Because certain people believe that non-Christians may be offended by the term “Christmas” and we are talking those who migrate to a country from one that doesn’t recognise Christianity as a major religion.
Now, I don’t know about you but if I had a tradition that had been in place for thousands of years and someone suddenly decided they wanted to change things just because it may cause offence, I wouldn’t been very pleased by it. It was only a few decades ago that migrants would come to a country and just accept the culture of their adopted country because it was the way things were done. The only people who would be offended by Christmas [or any other religious holidays] or colour related/disadvantaged objects are the people who choose to be offended by them.
One wonders why migrants come to a country if they can’t accept the traditions and values of that country.
