Helen’s mind was pre-occupied as she drove into work that morning, justifiable given that she had less than four hours sleep the night before. It had been six years to the day and she wasn’t feeling any more comfortable about what had happened. For every anniversary, she dreaded the unlikelihood that someone would upset the apple cart. She knew the probability of such an occurrence was doubtful but a niggling feeling within her constantly remained. There were for too many malicious individuals on the outset to be too insouciant. Unfortunately, as the old saying went, everything that could happen would and today was one of these days.

Scriptwriting – things to consider

Have you ever had an idea and thought “wow, that would make an awesome movie!”? You grab a pen and some paper and start scribbling down the script as you visualise it.

Stop press! Before you get too carried away with the script, there are a few things to consider regarding what sort of scene should go into the script. I’ve read many a script by first time writers and found myself giving the same advice over and over. So, in order to prevent you from falling into the same trap, here are a few tips to get you thinking.

Script preparation

One of the hardest things about writing a script is what’s actually going to go into it. You may have an idea or two on what your script will be about but unless you have some meat to put on the skeleton, you’re not likely to get very far.

Character characteristics

A story isn’t much good if there isn’t anyone to pull it off. Think of a story as a stage. Okay, so you have a brilliant plot about the end of the world. You look at the stage and wait for the action to happen. The only problem is, because you’ve only written the plot, there’s no one on stage to bring the action to life. Here’s where you need characters in your story.

Look to the Owner – Not the Dog

In the last few months, there have been media reports of dog attacks in the suburbs of Australia. While that in itself is devastating enough – especially following deaths of victims, it appears to be the breed of American pit bulls terriers that have been singled out as the dangerous breed. Unfortunately, what the media fails to report is the fact that the dogs aren’t the main issue but the upbringing of the so-called “dangerous” breed. And it doesn’t help that the majority of the reports are about the crossbreed of pit bulls and some not even.
